about

Written in Toronto in 1993 originally for The Barbara Lynch Band, this song is (like so many of my songs) inspired by the twin themes of Robertson Davies and urban squalor. In the book, "World of Wonders" Davies keep talking about "Merlin's laugh" being the sound of someone who knows that the gold in hidden in the shit.

Being a drug-induced musician in Toronto and playing lots of late night gigs I was familiar with many of the homeless and wasted and they figured largely in my view of Toronto. Back alley Arthur's then, with their wine breath, missing teeth and fingers playing inches away from the ticket out. Merlin laughs.

lyrics

Back alley point of view.
Strange light in the sky.
And all around the smell,
of garbage piled high.
I see a figure in the gloom,
dirty fingers reaching out.
I hear sound of Merlin's laugh…

A little bit of this, a little bit of that
a little bit of everything goes in the hat.
You are involved this is your life
choose wisely friend 'cause everything has a price.

He asks me for a cigarette and offers me a drink.
He takes some objects from a bag and says there's something
I should see.
A severed finger a diamond ring, a bible and a string of pearls.
Then he looks me in the eye, and whispers…

A little bit of this, a little bit of that
a little bit of everything goes in the hat.
You are involved can't get away
might be a game but you still got to play.
