Written in 1998, this tune was our attempt at a larger sound in a Jacob Dylan or Tom Petty-like way. Like most of the album, the track is the first take and features the core of guitar, bass, drums and lead vocals. I am not sure why we recorded this live to two track but we did so I was never able to change the fundamental mix that went down in the first place. I transferred it to my Logic system and later doubled the lead voice, added acoustic guitars, organ and electric piano. I fought very hard against the temptation of adding a HUGE choral outro, but I think maybe I should have put some harmonies at the end though.
I love the imagery in this song and have since used them in many others: sinking into the earth: falling into the sky: dissolving into nature.
lyrics
Through the dark of the longest night of my life.
I went to the quiet fields far out of sight.
As I lay on the cold ground, I closed my eyes.
Saw my soul go falling out through the sky.
Angel of the undertone,
the stars are out tonight.
Come to me we'll dance alone,
I can change my mind but not my mind, you know
I can't change that.
No I can't change that.
Freezing cold on the longest night of my life.
As my bones sank below ground,
frost filled my eyes.
Gemini was rising blind through the skies,
'til dawn came and called me and I was alive.
Angel of the undertone,
I could see it in your eyes.
The truth is now I'm on my own,
I could change your mind but not your heart, I know
I can't change that.
No I can't change that.
Angel of the undertone.
the stars are out tonight,
come to me we'll dance alone
and we'll hold each other tight.
We both knew this all along,
we can change our minds but not our hearts, you know
we can't change that.
No we can't change that.
